Literal meaning: Endtime fascism describes the political formation in which fascist or authoritarian politics are legitimised by apocalyptic urgency — the claim that the civilisational situation is so dire, the threat so existential, that the normal constraints of democratic governance, human rights, and legal process must be suspended. The emergency justifies the extraordinary.
Origin: Political theorists including Roger Griffin (fascism as palingenetic ultranationalism — the rebirth of the nation through catastrophe) and Robert Paxton (The Anatomy of Fascism, 2004) provide the analytical framework. The eschatological dimension — fascism as response to genuine or manufactured civilisational collapse — is documented across 20th century fascist movements and their contemporary successors. The digital amplification of apocalyptic political language has made the structure more visible and more rapidly distributable.
Authoritarian politics that frames society as being in terminal decline — using fear of collapse to justify the removal of democratic constraints.
The Appeal: Endtime fascism speaks to genuine anxieties about civilisational change — immigration, demographic shift, economic disruption, technological transformation. These are real. The authoritarian response — strong leadership, clear enemies, urgent action — provides cognitive clarity and emotional relief in conditions of genuine complexity.
The Friction: Millenarianism is the ideological structure: corrupt present, catastrophic transition, chosen community. Armageddon Complex is the power-accumulation mechanism: the emergency justifies what would otherwise be illegitimate. Disaster Nationalism is the mainstream political form; endtime fascism is the more extreme endpoint. Technofascism is what endtime fascism looks like with advanced technology infrastructure. The specific harm of the “ordinary limits no longer apply” move is documented: what is suspended in emergency is rarely restored. The emergency that justified the suspension becomes the justification for its permanence.
Why This Matters: Endtime fascism names the specific move of using apocalyptic urgency to suspend democratic constraint.
