Origin: The term entered analytical circulation in 2024 as researchers and commentators documented the rapid increase in AI-generated content across search results, social media, news aggregators, and professional communications. Simon Willison’s framing of “AI slop” as a category — content that is identifiable as low-effort AI output — was widely adopted. Slopification extends this to describe the systemic effect: not just individual pieces of slop but the transformation of information environments by the accumulation of AI slop.

The Appeal: AI-generated content is fast, cheap, and scalable. For organisations under pressure to produce content continuously, it solves a real resource problem. The Friction: The aggregate effect is different from the individual decision. AI Hallucination — fluently false output — propagates at the same scale as the content itself. Synthetic Generation — AI-generated content at scale — is the mechanism; slopification is the environmental outcome. Age of Average — the algorithmic homogenisation of aesthetics and ideas — describes what slopification produces culturally: a flattening, a narrowing, a convergence on the median. The information environment that AI systems are trained on is increasingly composed of AI-generated content — a feedback loop with no obvious floor.
Why This Matters: Slopification is the term that names what happens to the commons. Individual AI use is a personal decision. Slopification is what that decision looks like at scale, across millions of users, over time.
