Literal meaning: AI dependency describes the structural integration of AI tools into workflows, decisions, and cognitive processes — to the point where functioning without them becomes difficult or impossible. It is distinct from useful tool adoption: dependency implies that the capacity to operate independently has diminished.
Origin: The concept draws on research into technology dependency more broadly — from GPS navigation eliminating spatial memory to autocorrect affecting spelling. Applied specifically to AI, it gained analytical traction from 2022 as large language models entered professional workflows rapidly. Researchers including Samuel Spaulding and colleagues at MIT began documenting measurable changes in writing, research, and problem-solving behaviour in AI-assisted populations.
The structural integration of AI into daily cognitive and professional tasks — where the capability to function without it quietly erodes.
The Appeal: AI tools are genuinely useful. They reduce friction, accelerate work, and make complex tasks accessible to more people. Dependency often feels like efficiency — and in many cases, it is. Relying on a calculator does not make you worse at mathematics in any meaningful practical sense.
The Friction: The calculator analogy holds until it does not. Deskilling — automation making foundational skills redundant — describes what happens when the tool is not just augmenting a skill but replacing the cognitive process behind it. Cognitive Offloading — transferring thinking to tools — becomes dependency when the transferred capacity atrophies. Sycophancy (AI) compounds the problem: a system that agrees with you and smooths your thinking does not develop your judgment — it replaces the need for it. The dependency is structural: it is built into workflows, hiring expectations, and educational curricula before individuals can evaluate the trade-off.
Why This Matters: AI dependency is visible in retrospect, not in advance. The moment it becomes legible is usually the moment the tool is unavailable, the output is wrong, or the skill is needed and gone.
