Literal meaning: Digital amnesia describes the diminished capacity to retain information that a person knows is accessible via a digital device — phone numbers, addresses, dates, facts — because the availability of the digital resource removes the cognitive pressure to commit it to memory.
Origin: The term was coined by cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab in a 2015 consumer study that found large proportions of smartphone users could not recall their children’s phone numbers, their partners’ numbers, or basic personal information they had previously memorised. The study drew on the concept of the Google Effect — documented by psychologists Sparrow, Liu, and Wegner in a landmark 2011 Science paper — which found that people who know information is searchable are less likely to retain it and more likely to remember where to find it than what it contains.
The reduction in memory retention produced by habitual delegation of recall to digital devices — you remember less because you expect the device to remember for you.
The Appeal: The cognitive trade-off is rational. If information is reliably accessible externally, the memory resources previously committed to storing it can be redirected. This is a well-documented feature of human cognition — we have always used external memory (notebooks, libraries, other people) to extend capacity. The phone is a more efficient external memory than most.
The Friction: The efficiency has a cost. Sparrow et al. documented not just reduced retention but a change in the type of memory being exercised: less semantic memory (what things are), more procedural memory (where to find things). Cognitive Offloading — transferring cognitive work to tools — becomes Deskilling when the capacity atrophies: if the device is unavailable, the information is gone. Cognitive Surrender is the broader pattern of which digital amnesia is one symptom — the gradual transfer not just of recall but of thinking to digital systems. The Google Effect also found that people who expected to find information later paid less attention to it while learning it — meaning the availability of retrieval affects encoding from the start. Brain Rot names the cluster’s other prominent cognitive cost — not memory offloading but content-quality dulling, a different mechanism producing a parallel, equally visible kind of harm.
Why This Matters: Digital amnesia makes visible what happens to memory when the archive is always open. The question is not whether external memory is useful — it is which capacities you are prepared to let become inaccessible when the archive is not.
