Enough contact to stay interested. Not enough to mean anything.
Literal meaning: Breadcrumbing describes a pattern of intermittent, minimal communication — occasional messages, likes, or brief interactions — that maintains another person’s interest and emotional investment without any genuine relational commitment. The breadcrumber provides just enough to prevent the other person from moving on.
Origin: The term emerged in dating and relationship discourse around 2016–2017, alongside a wave of vocabulary for digitally-mediated relational avoidance. It draws on the fairy tale image of breadcrumbs as misleading trails — small signals that seem to lead somewhere but do not. The study by Navarro et al. (2020) shows that individuals who experience breadcrumbing report lower life satisfaction and higher levels of loneliness and helplessness, whereas ghosting did not have a significant effect on these factors. Tyson et al. (2016) show that the Tinder encourages low-commitment behavior due to many choices and minimal effort required for interaction. This makes breadcrumbing more likely, as users can maintain contact with multiple people without serious intentions.
Intermittent minimal contact that keeps another person’s emotional investment alive without any real intention of reciprocating.
The Appeal: From the breadcrumber’s perspective, the pattern often reflects genuine ambivalence rather than deliberate manipulation. They are not certain they want to end the connection. They keep the door slightly open. The platform makes this easy — a like requires no decision, a brief message no commitment.
The Friction: The asymmetry is the problem. Dopamine Feedback Loops — variable reward schedules — make intermittent signals more potent than consistent ones: the occasional message from the breadcrumber is more compelling than regular contact from someone else. The target’s investment grows in proportion to the uncertainty. Ghosting is what breadcrumbing defers — the ending that never comes, replaced by a perpetual almost. Orbiting is breadcrumbing’s passive variant: presence without communication. What all three share is the use of platform features to manage emotional distance while avoiding relational accountability.
Why This Matters: Breadcrumbing makes visible how platform affordances enable relational ambiguity at scale. The behaviour is not new; the infrastructure that makes it frictionless is.
