You ended the relationship. You still watch every story.
Literal meaning: Orbiting describes the pattern of maintaining passive digital presence in someone’s life after ending direct communication — continuing to view their stories, like their posts, or engage minimally with their content, without resuming contact. The name comes from the image of remaining in someone’s gravitational field without landing.
Origin: The term entered common use around 2014–2015 with the rise of dating apps, naming a digital twist on an old behavior: avoiding difficult conversations. LeFebvre et al. (2019) define Ghostingghosting]** as a total cutoff—a “digital disappearance” that, while painful, offers a clear end. Orbiting is arguably more torturous. Here, the disengager stops replying but maintains a passive digital presence by viewing stories or liking posts. Pancani et al. (2021) found this creates deeper distress than ghosting because it denies closure: the person is visible yet unreachable, forcing the recipient to constantly interpret silent signals. Freedman et al. (2019) note that while both strategies often stem from a desire to avoid conflict, orbiting adds a layer of control, leaving the ex-partner in a state of ambiguous limbo. Ghosting closes the door; orbiting leaves it ajar, with no one on the other side.

The Appeal: Orbiting requires no decision. The algorithm surfaces the content; the view registers automatically in many cases. The orbiter may be genuinely ambivalent — not ready to re-engage, not ready to fully disengage. The platform accommodates this perfectly: it provides presence without conversation.
The Friction: The asymmetry is one-sided and platform-amplified. The person being orbited receives the signal — the view, the like — without context. It is enough to reactivate hope or confusion, not enough to clarify the relationship’s status. Ghosting ends active communication; orbiting continues passive observation — which means the ghosted person receives evidence that the ghoster is present and choosing not to speak. Breadcrumbing is orbiting made intermittently active. What all three share is the use of platform affordances to manage emotional presence without accountability. Recommender Systems facilitate orbiting: the algorithm keeps the person’s content in front of you, and the view happens before the decision.
Why This Matters: Orbiting makes visible what platform observation features do to the experience of endings. A relationship that ended is not over if the signal keeps arriving.
