How are you. Fine. The exchange happened. Nobody meant either sentence.
Literal meaning: Phatic communication — from Greek phatos, spoken — refers to language used not to convey information but to establish and maintain social connection. “Nice weather.” “Safe travels.” “Let me know if you need anything.” The content is not the point; the connection is. In the digital context, likes, emoji reactions, story views, and many short messages function phatically.
Origin: The term phatic communion was coined by British anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski in his essay “The Problem of Meaning in Primitive Languages. Linguist Roman Jakobson formalised it as a distinct communicative function in 1960. Applied to digital communication, the term gained analytical traction as researchers began documenting the volume and shallowness of social media interaction — and the social anxieties produced by its absence.
Communication whose function is social maintenance rather than information exchange — and which, at platform scale, generates engagement data.
The Appeal: Phatic interaction is socially real. The like that says “I see you.” The “haha” that says “I’m still here.” The story view that says “I noticed.” These signals are not meaningless — they do the social work of maintaining the network of weak ties that research shows is genuinely valuable. Platform architects understood this before most users did.
The Friction: At scale, phatic interaction displaces substantive communication. The platform optimises for engagement volume — and phatic signals are fast, low-effort, and high-frequency. Dopamine Feedback Loops — variable reward schedules — make receiving them compelling. Ghosting — ending contact without explanation — is partly the inverse: when even phatic maintenance stops, the relationship ends without acknowledgement. Orbiting is phatic maintenance without relational commitment: watching stories, liking posts, staying present without being present. The abundance of phatic contact can mask a poverty of substantive connection.
Why This Matters: Phatic interaction makes visible the gap between being connected and being in contact. A feed full of responses is not the same as a conversation. Once you know the difference, you can count one without mistaking it for the other.
