Literal meaning: QAnon is a conspiracy theory originating in anonymous posts on 4chan from October 2017, claiming that a secret cabal of Satan-worshipping paedophiles — including prominent politicians and celebrities — controls world events, and that a military insider known as “Q” is revealing this truth to prepare a group of followers for a great awakening and reckoning.

The posts — called “Q drops” — were deliberately cryptic, inviting followers to decode their meaning. Researchers Kate Starbird, Renée DiResta, and others have documented how QAnon spread from fringe imageboards through Facebook groups, YouTube channels, and Twitter, reaching millions of followers globally by 2020. The January 6, 2021 storming of the US Capitol included documented QAnon participants. Variants of the theory have spread internationally.

The Appeal: QAnon offers participation, not just belief. Followers are not passive consumers — they are researchers decoding hidden truths. The community is real, the social bonds are genuine, and the sense of mission is intense. It also provides a totalising explanation: once you accept the framework, everything confirms it. Confusing world events, institutional failures, and personal anxieties all become legible through the Q lens.
The Friction: The participatory structure is the mechanism. Red Pill epistemology — division of the world into those who see and those who are deceived — is the prerequisite. Deep State provides the institutional target. Recommender Systems accelerated the spread: YouTube’s recommendation algorithm was documented surfacing increasingly extreme content to users who engaged with adjacent material. Conspirituality is the adjacent pathway: wellness communities became entry points through shared distrust of institutions. The theory is unfalsifiable by design: failed predictions are reinterpreted as disinformation or tests. The January 6 connection makes QAnon one of the clearest cases of online radicalisation producing real-world political violence.
Why This Matters: QAnon makes visible the full arc of digital radicalisation: from anonymous imageboard post to parliamentary storming in four years. The speed is new. The structure — hidden elite, awakened community, imminent reckoning — is ancient.
