The entry point was gluten. The algorithm built the bridge.
Literal meaning: The wellness-to-alt-right pipeline describes the documented pathway by which people move from wellness, alternative health, and New Age communities into far-right political positions — often without a clear moment of conversion. The journey is characterised by incremental steps through content that shares structural features: distrust of mainstream institutions, identification of hidden enemies, emphasis on purity and contamination, and insider knowledge as empowerment.
Origin: The pathway was documented by researchers and journalists from around 2018, accelerating significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic when anti-vaccine sentiment, lockdown opposition, and conspiracy content became heavily overlapping communities. Researchers including Jessica Valenti, Matthew Remski, and the team at the Global Network on Extremism and Technology documented specific content journeys and community overlaps. The pipeline is not one path but several, operating across platforms including YouTube, Instagram, Telegram, and podcast networks.
A radicalisation pathway from wellness communities to far-right politics — driven by algorithmic recommendation and shared distrust of institutions.
The Appeal: The pipeline is not experienced as a pipeline by those in it. Each step feels like acquiring more knowledge, becoming more aware, protecting yourself and your community. The distrust of pharmaceutical companies, the interest in natural health, the suspicion of government institutions — none of these positions is inherently extreme. The radicalisation happens in the accumulation and in the community.
The Friction: Recommender Systems — algorithms that determine what you see — are the infrastructure of the pipeline: content recommendation systems surface adjacent material, and the adjacency between wellness scepticism and political conspiracy is close. Conspirituality is the ideological substrate: the shared structure of hidden threat, insider knowledge, and bodily/national purity. Purity Culture is the connecting theme: the pure body and the pure nation share their logic and their enemies. Tradwife is one of the entry points: domestic aesthetics and traditional femininity function as early stages of the pipeline — content that feels benign but shares the same purity logic and demographic anxiety. The pipeline does not require any single moment of explicit radicalisation — it requires only that each step feel continuous with the last. Van de Griend & Pottjewijd (2026) document the mechanism in the Dutch context: vloggers who began with lockdown-free travel content gradually moved into far-right activism, carrying their audiences step by step into Great Replacement rhetoric and omvolkingstheorie. Ragebaiting is the engine: outrage about urban decline keeps audiences engaged at each stage, and the algorithm surfaces more extreme content in response.
Why This Matters: The wellness-to-alt-right pipeline makes visible that extremism recruitment does not require extremist entry points. The doorway is detox. The destination is somewhere else. Once you know the pathway, you can read its stages.
