The claim: women always want someone higher on the hierarchy. The evidence: personal anecdote, presented as evolutionary biology.
Literal meaning: Hypergamy — from Greek hyper (above) and gamos (marriage) — in its sociological sense describes the practice of marrying someone of higher social status. In manosphere discourse, it is redeployed as a universal female biological drive: women are hardwired to seek partners with higher status, resources, and dominance than themselves, and to continuously seek upgrades. The claim is presented as evolutionary biology.
Origin: The sociological concept of hypergamy has been used in anthropology and sociology to describe marriage patterns, particularly in caste societies. The manosphere appropriation strips the historical and cultural specificity from the concept and presents it as a universal biological law. The claim draws selectively on evolutionary psychology — specifically sexual selection theory — while ignoring the substantial research complicating or contradicting it.
A sociological term describing marriage patterns, captured and redeployed as a universal biological law to explain men’s romantic failures.
The Appeal: Hypergamy provides an explanation for rejection that locates the cause externally: it is not that I am unattractive or unsuitable, it is that women are biologically programmed to reject men who are not high enough status. It also generates a prescription: become high status, and the biological drive will work in your favour. The evolutionary framing gives the claim scientific authority.
The Friction: The scientific basis is contested. Evolutionary psychology research on mate preferences is substantially more complex, contextually variable, and contested than the manosphere hypergamy claim implies. The claim is also unfalsifiable as deployed: any relationship where a woman dates a man of higher status confirms it; any relationship where she dates a man of lower status is explained away. SMV (Sexual Market Value) is the market framework that makes hypergamy operational: if attractiveness is a score, hypergamy describes how women shop. Womanosphere adopts the same concept in a different register: women should leverage their hypergamic drive strategically. Incel ideology uses hypergamy to explain why men at the bottom of the SMV hierarchy are rejected: they are simply not high enough value to overcome female hypergamic selection.
Why This Matters: Hypergamy makes visible how scientific-sounding vocabulary can function as an unfalsifiable explanation for personal experience. Once the claim is biological and universal, no counter-evidence is possible. That’s not science — it’s a closed loop.
